Saturday was opening day at the park where Miles plays baseball. This is his first year moving up from T-ball and it’s a whole new ballgame. For starters the tee is gone so the boys have to hit pitches thrown to them by the coach. Speaking of the boys, they’re bigger, they run faster, throw harder and they’re more interested in winning.
Did I mention he’s only 7?
Well, I’m happy to report that Miles can hang with the big boys. He hit a homerun on his first time up to bat and I caught it all with my new video camera.
Nice camera work, right? Ahem, Miles has skills, too. And, I promise we don’t know A-Rod’s cousin – no sports enhancement drugs at Wifey's House.

Let the Games Begin
Another sports season has officially begun for my little scholar athletes. Basketball – a personal favorite of mine. While Miles is ballin’ big time and loving it, Milan decided not to play. Despite my desperate attempts to persuade, trick and bribe her; the cute little skirts and puffy pompoms won her over – she’s cheerleading.
While I’ve been known in the past to get involved and visibly show my team support, I’m taking the low-key approach this season. No shirts, buttons or homemade signs just lots of love, encouragement… and, of course, pictures.

Milan showing Miles some pre-game love.

My little happy cheerleader.

Post game ice-down. No, he isn't bribing the ref, that's Husband staying involved.
What about your house? What activites do you and your children do? Active moms want to know...

Scholar Athletes
Friday’s confession…
I’m at it again. Another season of sports at Wifey’s House and somehow I just can’t help but lose myself in the moment. Now I’ve got two to juggle. Miles had his first football game last Saturday and Milan had her first softball game.

Every overboard mom needs a team sign (yes, I made it myself)...

Baseball, Books & Ballet
It was a busy weekend at Wifey’s House. First, on Saturday morning, Miles’ had closing ceremonies at his baseball park. He went home with two trophies – one for participating and one because his team took third place in the T-Ball division. Yay! That also ended my Team Mom responsibilities – whoo hoo... ahem... I mean, it’s been a wonderful season and I’m so grateful to have had this opportunity.

Miles and me – celebrating a winning season!
Next, my sister hosted a little soiree for me on Saturday afternoon to celebrate the launch of my new book, Help! I’m a Newlywed…What Do I Do Now? Wife-Saving Advice Every New Bride Must Know to Survive the First Year of Marriage. It was fun to share my joy with some of my closest friends and family; and to sign and sell a few books, too!

Me at my book soiree, signing away.
And, last but not least, little ballerina girl had her dance recital on Sunday afternoon. What can I say, but she was absolutely priceless. I’m not sure that any of the eight girls in her class made one move on point or at the same time, but they were just as perfect as they could be – and loving every minute of it!
Did you see me mama?! Did you see me on the big stage?!
Oh, I saw my little diva in the making. And, couldn’t be prouder…

Little ballerina girl, showing off her trophy, too!

Whirlwind Weekend
Wow. The past few days have been a bit of a whirlwind.
It started on Friday night when Miles had a T-ball game. After that we went out to Taco Mac (Husband and Miles’ favorite wings spot) to celebrate winning the game and that Miles is on the Principal’s List this quarter at school. It had absolutely nothing to do with the fact that I wasn’t cooking dinner that night – ahem – really.
Saturday morning, Milan had to be at her dance school for recital rehearsal from 9 a.m. to noon. We scooped her up at 12 p.m. and headed straight to the park for yet another T-ball game. Did I mention it was raining? Yes, they made them play in the rain. It was a light rain, but it was raining none the less. From there, I darted off to my game – or match to be more accurate. My tennis team made the playoffs and round one was this past Saturday. We all played great, but my team didn’t win enough matches to move on. But… at least the sun came out. From there we headed home, freshened up, and then Husband and I hurried out the door to catch a 7:30 p.m. movie – Iron Man. It was the bomb – no pun intended.
Sunday was just as busy. It was Atlanta Braves day for Miles’ baseball park, so all of the teams got to parade around the field just before the Braves played. It was Miles’ first time going to a professional baseball game and he absolutely loved it. Husband, Milan, my dad and my mother-in-law also came out for the fun. Milan had a ball, although she cared less about the baseball game and more about the pretzels, cotton candy and icees. It was an exciting and very expensive day. We had to have spent at least the entire week’s grocery budget in one day, but I won’t go there… that’s another whole post.

Miles and his $8 foam finger.

Milan hailing down the cotton candy man.
We were at the game all day then took Miles to his first football practice. The season doesn’t officially start until August, but the team has started doing conditioning exercises every other Sunday. That, too, is another story that I’m sure I’ll post about – soon! We ended up home around 8:00 p.m. – the kids’ bedtime – and didn’t get everyone fed, bathed and tucked into bed until around 9:30 p.m. I don’t think I made it past 9:35 p.m.
I never thought I would look forward to a Monday morning. Whew. Am I the only one who needs a weekend to recover from my weekend?

I Survived!
Whew! I survived Opening Day at the park where Miles’ plays T-Ball. I was ready for a margarita by 2 p.m., but I survived.
The day actually started the night before when we spent about two hours at the park delivering sodas, cakes, sponsorship money and waivers. Husband had Miles in the batter’s box practicing while Milan and I took care of Team Mom and Team Sister responsibilities. Yes, she has declared herself the Team Sister.
The next morning we had to be at the parade site at 7:30 a.m. to decorate the truck and hand out team jerseys. The parade and opening ceremonies went well, and afterwards the kids had a good hour to play on the inflatable bouncers and slides before it was time for Miles’ game.
We won the game, but can I just tell you it was comedy. If you are ever depressed or unhappy go to a T-Ball game and you will laugh – a lot! Many of the kids haven’t played before so they really don’t know what they are doing yet, but they are just as happy and proud to be out there running around – even if it is to the wrong base.
Miles’ did well. He is one of the oldest on the team and has played before. He hit two triples and played well in the outfield. I was really proud - and happy - when it was over.
Despite all of my griping about being Team Mom, quietly I’m enjoying it. Shh, don’t tell anybody, I will totally deny it. When I see my baby and all of the other kids out there learning, growing and having fun – it warms my heart.
Look at my little superstar…

How could I not step up to the plate with him?
Now, that’s not to say that I will be running for Team Mom of the Year, but I will do my best to make it a great season for Miles’ and his team – even if that means keeping up with 12 little guys – and their parents, learning how to keep the scorebook, or stepping in for the snack mom if she forgets to bring them.

What Did I Get Myself Into?
Now I know why everyone looks around at each other when the coach asks who would like to be the Team Mom? What I haven’t figured out yet is why I raised my hand.
I felt bad. Miles' T-Ball coach asked the question two or three times and everybody looked away and mumbled the reasons why they couldn’t. I also heard Husband’s words ringing in my head. You never make the commitment to get involved. What? What! Yes, ma’am, those words sparked a huge, I mean calm and well behaved debate. I never get involved … hmm… could it be because I am working, taking care of a husband, two kids, a dog, writing a book, cleaning the house, shuffling the kids around to their activities ... blah, blah, blah.
After getting over myself and the long list of things I am very committed to, I finally heard what Husband was trying to say. He wasn’t questioning my ability to commit, but more my willingness to take on one more role. I, like many other mothers who have overloaded plates, hadn’t raised my hand to be Team Mom because it’s one more thing that I thought I didn’t have time to do. For many this is true, but sometimes a little shuffling and scheduling can clear out a few minutes in the day to take care of Team Mom responsibilities. Or so I thought when I raised my hand.
How hard could it be anyway? In my previous life, B.K. (Before Kids), when I worked as a publicist in the music industry, I was responsible for flying superstar artists and their entourages - bands, dancers, mamas, boyfriends, dogs (don’t ask) - around the country and arranged performances on some of the top television and award shows. I’ve walked Usher, OutKast, and many others down the red carpet at The Grammy Awards. Surely I can handle eleven 5 and 6 year-old little boys playing T-ball in the park once a week. Ha.
While, it wasn't quite as demanding as a walk down the paparazzi filled red carpet, my first Team Mom meeting lasted two, yes, two hours where I received a very well-organized and detailed packet full of information that I was responsible for throughout the season. Yeah. Now I know why everyone looks around when the coach asks who would like to be the Team Mom?
Opening Day at the park is this Saturday. There are team banners to be made, names to put on jerseys, snacks to schedule, a truck for the parade to decorate, fundraising to do, waivers to sign…
Wish me and the Southwest T-Ball White Sox good luck…

Wifey
